Youngblood Brass Band (USA)
Globe-trotting riot jazzers Youngblood Brass Band are focused on creating progressive, raw, acoustic, modern, dance-til-you-mean-it music. The ten-member ensemble, born in Wisconsin, now hails from all over the US (New York NY / Nashville TN / Minneapolis MN / Chicago IL / Madison WI).
They have been touring throughout Europe, the States and beyond for the past decade, performing in over twenty countries, and being featured at the biggest music festivals in the world: Roskilde, Glastonbury, North Sea Jazz, Blue Note, WOMAD, etc. Their intense on-stage aesthetic secured their status as an incredible group to see live, whether in intimate club settings or on international festival stages.
YBB’s debut album ‘Unlearn’ was released in 2000, featuring collaborations with Talib Kweli, Mike Ladd, DJ Skooly and ex-Frank Zappa vocalist Ike Willis. This led to a record deal with Ozone Music (NYC), the revolutionary avant-hiphop label that introduced the poetic talents and radical aims of Company Flow (El-P), Mike Ladd, Antipop Consortium and Saul Williams, among others. Their 2003 follow-up, Center:Level:Roar, was released to international acclaim and had them trekking around the globe to sold-out audiences everywhere. YoungBlood’s next album, Is That a Riot? (2007), was their most aggressive, experimental music to date, featuring new players, all original compositions, and the music being taken to its dynamic, timbral and beat-driven extremes. The new album, Pax Volumi (released 10 Sept 2013 on Tru Thoughts), is their first in almost 5 years, and is a massive leap forward in terms of production, creativity, conviction, and individual performance. This is the place that it took more than a decade to get to… and it was worth it. The band no longer just mashes up genres and plays loud/hard/crazy… the band is now making music that is completely unlike anything else, and with an aesthetic that cannot be matched in intensity.
In 2004, Youngblood launched Layered Music. This organization functions as an independent record label, literature and sheet music publishing company, recording studio, and forum for like-minded artists/students/educators, working together to provide arts and education-related opportunities. Songs from the YoungBlood catalog are now available as marching and big band arrangements through Warner Bros. Publications, in addition to the band’s own verbatim song transcriptions. University marching bands and jazz ensembles around the world are now frequently heard playing YBB music.
